Newborn photography is a beautiful art form that requires a special set of skills and training. As a photographer who has specialized in this field, I can attest to the fact that it takes a lot of dedication and patience to capture the perfect moments of a newborn. However, it is not just about taking beautiful photos, as there are many considerations that go into ensuring the safety and comfort of the newborn throughout the entire process.
Newborn photography is different from other types of photography. Babies are delicate and need to be handled with care. This is where the skills and training of a newborn photographer come into play. To capture those beautiful shots, a photographer must have a deep understanding of how to handle newborns, how to keep them comfortable and safe, and how to work with them to create those timeless images.
Safety is the top priority in newborn photography, and every experienced and certified newborn photographer should prioritize it. For example, newborns should never be posed in ways that put them in danger or compromise their safety. Therefore, photographers must have a deep understanding of the best and safe ways to pose and handle the newborns. Additionally, the photographer must have an understanding of the necessary safety precautions that should be taken during a photoshoot, such as making sure the environment is free of any potential hazards or allergens.
Another crucial skill for newborn photography is patience. Newborns are unpredictable, and they have their own schedules, so a photographer must be flexible and work around their needs. This requires a lot of patience and perseverance, as the photographer must be ready to work around any unexpected behaviors or movements from the newborn.
Photoshop and editing are also essential parts of newborn photography. The photographer must have advanced knowledge of editing software to bring out the best of the images captured. The reason is that many of the final images sent to a client are a composite of two, three, or sometimes even four images put together into one. As you can see from the image below, I pieced three photos together to ensure that the newborn was never in an unsafe or unsupported position. Without the use of Photoshop, this image could not have been taken without risking the newborn’s safety.
In conclusion, newborn photography is a beautiful and rewarding profession. However, it is not for the faint of heart. It requires a lot of training, skills, and patience to become an experienced and certified newborn photographer. As a photographer, I always emphasize that safety is a top priority, and I work hard to ensure that all of the newborns I photograph are comfortable and secure throughout the entire process. If you are looking for a newborn photographer, make sure to choose an experienced and certified one, who has deep knowledge of the newborn industry and takes pride in keeping your newborn safe and comfortable while capturing those beautiful moments.
